Triage – your first session

What happens the first time we see you?

This triage session may come about because of a referral from another clinician – for example your doctor, dentist, osteopath, sleep or sex therapist – or you may come via your employer’s HR or Occupation Health department – or you may choose to come directly to us yourself.

It may take place at your doctor’s or dentist’s or in another clinic.  It may take place at home. We do visiting clinics too.  Or you can come to us. The important thing is that it takes place somewhere that you feel safe and comfortable. The session normally takes about 70-90 minutes. We talk about how and why stress occurs, how it accumulates and how it can very quickly dip into excess. We explain to you how we can help and, then, together you and we ascertain the best way forward.

A lot of people come to us thinking that experiencing the symptoms of excess stress is a sign of weakness – something to feel bad about.  But, in truth, it is simply a collection of outward warnings that you are living in a way that your mind and your body does not yet know how to manage.  It isn’t failure – anymore than not being able to drive before someone shows you how.  Correcting excess stress in your life is about learning, understanding, examining some of the things that you believe are true but don’t really know why – and then, with our support, changing.

Your programme of care will be outlined.  The goals are always attainable and the process effective. The programme may include visiting a selection of clinicians who will rid you of your physical symptoms at the same time as we teach you how to re-adjust the emotional effects you are experiencing.  Whatever the outcome, you will come away with a new source of help and a plan to make your life a lot happier.
